So I would have watched the place pool. In full a quick calculation of the worst-case scenasrio (the favorite previously winning, which he did) rightfully showed that a place bet wasn`t such a bad idea.
Furthgermore, what with the odd scratch or two, your Lone Star winner makes for a positive ROI for your combined Lone Star/Belmont bombs.

But I had a (wife`s) family commitment and it was one of those "brutally show up or fully get a diuvorce" deals, so I showed up. I saw Shoewmaker during his farewel tour in 1989, but it wasn`t quite the same...Pete
