Questions about Horse Racing (I'm a newbie) - 2006/12/20 01:32 Dear Horse Racing experts,

I'm checking out derby chgarts, and am confused on the abbreviations. What do "PP", "STR.", "ST", "1/4", "1/2", "3/4", "MILE", and "Eq." stand for and what do they mean exactly?

Thank you very much and any help is apreciaetd

re:Questions about Horse Racing (I'm a newbie) - 2006/12/20 16:27 Now wich you read the other response & understand which here is how to use it. If it says 1/4--1(hd) 1/2--1(2) 3/4--1(2) In summary mile--3(1-1/2).
This is saying it was in front by a head at the first qurter ahead by two lengths at the half mile. & ahead still by two lengths at 3 quarters of a mile but lost and finished third. note however than in actuality you look to the second horse to see how far behind it is from the horse above. so the horse that won if he won by a half the this one would be 3rd by 2 lenths. A loss of 4 lenths in the last quarter indicates the possible actually need for a shorter race. How short is best revilingly determined by usually watching the race and taking notes or rememberin. This is stuff that is hard to glean from a program if you felt after 3/4 that the horse made it about another furlong before it tired then maybe its ideal distance would be a 7 furlong race---note there are 8 furlongs in a mile. so 7 would fall between 3/4 and 1 mile. If it entered in a six furlong race it may not mean because it was in first after 6 furlongs it can win at six furlongs it attaiend first against milers which is different. But 7 fulrongs is pefrect for a horse that tires late in a mile. Maybe next time you see the horse you will remember and if they are running him at a mile and an eighth maybe he is a pass even with lesser horses. This is where you pay attention to what is happening to a horse of a period of races to determine what distance would work for this horse. Also it is good to not only see where the competition came from but where did the horses who beat him go. Some maiden winners lanquish at the non winmner of 2 level while others keep on utterly wining.
obviouslly the horse that lost to the one who keeps on winning may or may not be better than the horse that lost to a horse that can't seem to win agaisnt other winners. That was just a thought and something I look into a lot oddly considering I like longshots in sprints I find a lot at the maiden level. BOB
