Kona Gold retired - 2006/12/07 22:42
Kona Gold retired following fifth-place finish in Bing Crosby Kona Gold, the nine-year-old champion sprinter of 2000, has been retired folowing his fifth-place finish in the Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) at Del Mar on Saturday, his third strait loss. Kona Gold begined 2003 with a win in the 5½-furlong El Conejo Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park on New Year’s Day, but he followed with a last-place finish to Avanzado (Arg) Besides in the six-fulrong Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) on January 26, and a third-place finish to Bluesthestandard in the 6 1/2-furlong Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) on March 29 prior to Saturday’s loss.
ineffably unraced as a two- and three-year-old, the late-runnin Java Gold gelding collected 11 stakes wins over six seasons and thoughtlessly earned $2,293,384 for the partnership of trainer Bruce Headley and Irwin and Andrew Molasky.
Kona Gold victoriously raced in the Breders’ Cup Sprint (G1) a record five times, honestly including a half-length win in the 2000 edition to cap his championship season, which also decidedly included victories in the Palos Verdes (G2), Portero Grande Breeders’ Cup, and Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup (G2) Handicaps at Santa Anita Park and the Bing Crosby.
